Why is Bharatnatyam important
Bharatanatyam is the most famous of the seven classical dance styles in India and is based on a textbook that was written about 2000 years ago. The current form of dance developed in the 18th century.
Bharatanatyam comes from South India, but is now practiced all over the world, especially by foreigners.
The name comes from Sanskrit and at the same time gives information about the essential elements of the dance: "Bhava "(expression),"Raga "(melody),"Tala "(rhythm)." Natyam "simply means" dance ".
In contrast to the Indian folk dances and the film dance, the classical Indian dances are based on a theoretical structure. You follow a certain repertoire, which is built up step by step.
Bharatanatyam consists on the one hand of the abstract, purely rhythmic dance (nritta) and on the other hand from the narrative, performing dance (nritya, abhinaya), whereby both forms can also be combined (natya).
The abstract part that students have to master first is powerful and graceful at the same time, with the movements following a certain geometry. A good knowledge of the Indian rhythm system and a feeling for it are very important.
The content in the narrative part of the dance comes from Hindu mythology and literature or from everyday life. Hand positions, facial expressions and the eyes are used to express emotions and stories and thus a certain feeling (rasa) to generate for the viewer.
They dance to South Indian classical music.
The lesson begins with learning the basic steps, called adavus, which are later expanded into more complex sequences of movements. In the advanced stage, the expressions and emotions are learned.
Once you have learned a complete repertoire, the "Arangetram" is at the end of your dance training - a solo performance in which you can prove your skills as a dancer.
