What is yeast

Yeast refers to a microscopic fungus that is made up of a single oval cell. It is a single cell structure. Yeast is oval and mostly colorless or white in color. The most important characteristic of yeast is the asexual method of propagation. Yeast produces a daughter cell as a bud. Hence the asexual reproduction method is called budding. Yeast needs organic matter to maintain its nutrients. They secrete enzymes to the external food sources and digest them to obtain simple forms of nutrients. Hence, yeast can be used to make ethanol through fermentation. It is also used in the baking industry to make the dough rise.

What is mold

Mold refers to a form of fungus growth that grows in the form of multicellular filaments called hyphae. Mold colonies are visible to the naked eye. The propagation of mushrooms takes place through vegetative propagation. Tubular hyphae can contain a large number of nuclei with the same genetic makeup. Mold grows on organic material. It produces both sexual and asexual spores. A mold on faeces is shown in Figure 2.

Like yeast, molds get their nutrients through external enzymatic digestion of organic matter. They absorb nutrients through their cell wall. Molds are also used in food processing such as cheese, tempeh, and soy sauce production.
