Riddle about devil number 666 solved: is that the Antichrist?
Evil personified or even a monster is described in the Revelation of John with the number 666. Since then, the number has been the symbol of the devil. Researchers from Vienna now want to have solved the number puzzle and believe they know who the Satan described in the Bible really was.
In chapter 13 of Revelation, the author describes a horrific "beast" that is given great power by the devil (symbolized by a dragon) and that demands worship from all people. It is also clear that the "animal" described is a human being. Because the text says: “Here is wisdom. If you have understanding, calculate the number of the beast, for it is a man's number, and his number is 666.
That symbolizes the 666
The number 7 stands in biblical texts for the perfection and harmony in God's plans. For example, God created the heavens and earth in seven days. But if the 7 expresses perfection, the number 6, which is just less, must stand for something imperfect and flawed. The number is therefore often associated with enemies of God and political systems that oppose Christian teaching. The threefold repetition of the number emphasizes the forcefulness of the statement. The number 666 thus expresses God's clear criticism of the political systems and rulers.
But who, according to Revelation, did not rule for God? So far, Nero, Emperor Hadrian and Domitian have been the hot contenders for the title “Tier”. Researchers at the Institute for Ancient History at the University of Vienna now have a completely different man in their sights. According to the scientists, the number 666 is an "isopsephic puzzle". Each letter of the Greek alphabet is assigned a numerical value. If you add up the numerical values that make up a name, those in the know can read off the name from the sum. With the help of a computer program, the researchers in Vienna compiled a list of ancient personalities whose names add up to the checksum 666 - and they came across Marcus Ulpius Trajan, who was in power 98-117 AD.
Executions and blasphemy
Although Emperor Trajan spoke out against the persecution of Christians, he ordered the execution of all who refused the imperial cult and was thus responsible for the deaths of many devout Christians. According to the researchers, there is also specific evidence that the revelation was written in the time of Trajan. In one passage, the author Johannes referred to the city of Pergamon as the "seat of Satan". The imperial cult temple “Trajaneum” was built there in 110 AD. Many devout Christians perceived the building as a blasphemy.
