An alcohol is a hydroxy derivative of an aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon. Hydroxy derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons are counted among the alcohols if the OH group (hydroxyl group) is on a side chain of the aromatic.

Depending on whether the carbon atom that is adjacent to an OH group is also bound to one, two or three radicals, one speaks of primary, secondary or tertiary alcohols. Monohydric alcohols have one OH group per molecule, polyhydric alcohols have several OH groups.

Colloquially, the term alcohol is understood to mean ethanol.
