Can we use matlab online?

MathWorks Matlab, Simulink and Toolboxes

Students contact their course instructor about using Matlab. These provide the registration information.
Direct inquiries to ITS are not processed.

MathWorks offers a comprehensive suite of resources to help you integrate MATLAB and Simulink into your teaching and research activities. MATLAB encompasses signal and image processing, communication, control and regulation systems as well as financial mathematical operations. The software can be used to develop numerical calculations, data analysis and visualization as well as individual applications. Simulink is a block diagram environment for simulation and model-based design. Simulink is integrated in MATLAB so that MATLAB algorithms can be analyzed and further processed in models.

CHECKLIST for MATLAB usage

Students contact their course instructor about using Matlab. These provide the registration information.
Direct inquiries to ITS are not processed.

The TAH (Total Academic Headcount) contract available at the THM entitles employees, lecturers and students to use Matlab on various devices.
In order to show the way to the right license, the various options are explained below.

Use in research and teaching is required for all scenarios. For commercial use (including third-party funded projects with industry), appropriate licenses must be purchased from Mathworks.

Please note:

  • that when using a network license, no reactivation is necessary at the turn of the year, as this is done centrally on the license server
  • that single user licenses are only available until December 31st. are valid and then have to be reactivated, see point 4.)
  • Please use your THM e-mail address for all inquiries.

1.) Who would like to use Matlab?

If you are an employee or a lecturer, then go to 2.)
or
if you are a student, go to 5.)

2.) On which device should the software be used?

If it is a workstation computer in the THM-LAN, then continue with 3.)
or
if it is a single workstation outside the THM-LAN, then continue with 4.)
or
is it a laptop / notebook, then go to 4.)

3.) Network license

  • You will receive a license via the license server, the license officer of your department / organizational unit will provide you with the File Installation Key (FIK) and the license.dat.
  • The licensing officer in your department / organizational unit will provide you with the installation media.

4.) Single user license

  • You will receive a single seat license, please send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. To display JavaScript must be turned on! with the following information:
    - Operating system
    - MAC address of the computer
  • You will then receive the license information by email.
  • The licensing officer in your department / organizational unit will provide you with the installation media.

5.) Student option

The information for activating the account is given out by the course instructor (ideally with secure access via moodle).
If the course instructor does not have this information, please contact the central license management directly so that the students can then collect the relevant information. This avoids many individual emails from students and a multiple workload.
Follow the steps below:

1. Create an account on the Mathworks website.

2. Enter the key given by your course instructor, this will be assigned to the TAH contract and you will have access to the student option.

3. You now have two options for using it:

  • Online (in the web browser)
  • Offline (for this the download rights may have to be activated, which takes place no later than Friday. Please refrain from inquiries.)

More information

The VDI environment is currently not available from private devices for licensing reasons. We work on a solution. (As of December 2017)

The campus license may not only be used within the university, but also on the private computers of the THM employees. The license also includes installations in classrooms and laboratories. The license, which is valid for the entire university, also includes THM students. They are allowed to install the software on their computers at home or on laptops.
The campus license does not apply to commercial use of MathWorks products.
A commercial use exists, for example, if the products are used to produce applications that are to be marketed or projects are to be carried out on behalf of the industry against payment.

Further information is stored in the Intrawiki. The license officers of the departments and organizational units have access to this.
