Who do you prefer Apple or Google

Set Chrome, Firefox, DuckDuckGo as your default web browser in iOS 14

Jason Cross

If you prefer Chrome to Safari, iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 and later make the app the browser that is used to open web links from any application.

On iPhone, most people simply surf the web using Safari. It's the standard product, it's fast, secure, and energy efficient, and Apple is working hard to improve its privacy protection features. But iOS supports third-party browsers (even if they have to use Apple's WebKit page rendering engine), and some users prefer Chrome. There are millions of iPhone and iPad users who are into Chrome, be it because of Google's integration with its other services or because of the easier syncing with Chrome for the desktop.

While Chrome is easy enough to use on the iPhone or iPad, there hasn't been a way to make Chrome the default browser until now. If you've ever tapped a web link in another application like Mail or Messages, it will open in Safari. With iOS 14 and iPadOS, Apple is finally adding the ability to let email applications and web browsers set themselves as the default browser, and Chrome is one of the first to offer this option. Firefox and Duckduckgo are also included.

At the time of this writing, iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 are not yet final, but are in the public beta phase - the eighth betas are currently. If you've got the beta version (or are reading this after the official release of iOS 14), here's what you need to do to make Chrome your default browser.

Set Chrome as your default web browser

First, make sure that you are using iOS 14 (the beta or final version) and that you have installed the latest version of Google Chrome. Then follow these simple steps:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

  • Scroll down and tap Chrome.

  • Tap Default Browser App.

  • Choose Chrome.

To return to using Safari as the default browser, either uninstall Chrome or return to that settings menu and select Safari.
