Adobe Cloud CC for Universities

Adobe now only offers rental licenses (“Creative Cloud”) for new versions of most of its products (this policy applies internationally). So far, however, there is no suitable contract model for universities. The "VIP" sales model offered by Adobe for this purpose is unsuitable in some points, such as binding to personal accounts (no functional email addresses are allowed) and to cloud services (not suitable for universities, among other things due to a lack of solutions for data protection, employee life cycle and Supply of CIP pools and laboratories).

On the morning of November 25, 2014, we received the news that a draft contract for a desktop-based licensing of Adobe products according to the ETLA model, on which the ZKI Working Group Software Licenses had been working with Adobe Germany for around two years, from Adobe USA was final got rejected.

For the time being, Adobe products can still be purchased under the CLP contract - however, only the two-year-old versions of Creative Suite 6 are available here. In addition, the suites from the CLP contract are expected to be discontinued at the beginning of next year.

Unfortunately, Adobe does not currently offer a license model via which the German universities could license Adobe products according to their requirements.

It is only possible to conclude an ETLA contract based on the total number of employees at a university.

For desktop licenses, only the VIP program should be available in the future, which is not advisable due to the high administrative effort involved in both the distribution and administration of the licenses.

Both ETLA and VIP are rental models that pay an annual fee. We therefore recommend that you continue to use the purchase licenses from the CLP contract and promote alternative products for the time being.

Alternatives to Adobe products

Due to Adobe's licensing policy, we recommend using alternative products if possible.

The following table provides an overview of possible alternatives for the most popular Adobe products. This is just a selection; the list does not claim to be complete! As a general manufacturer alternative, Corel, a provider of software products for corresponding areas of application, should be mentioned at this point.
