What is a funnel and do I need one?

Have you ever asked yourself the question: what is a funnel? Lately you hear this term more and more often. In the digital world of marketing we usually speak of a so-called “sales funnel” or a sales funnel.

We adopt many linguistic habits from English. There are 2 reasons for this:

  • 1. The latest marketing trends come from the USA.
  • 2. The English terms often fit better and sound less foreign to the industry

But let's take a look at what a “sales funnel” actually is and why it makes sense to have one when you want to sell something online or collect leads.

What is a “sales funnel”?

In this context, a funnel is a process that takes the visitor to a website through several steps and ultimately turns him into a customer.

This marketing concept can be used both online and offline.

Without a funnel ...

Imagine someone goes into a shop to look for something. He walks around as a potential customer and looks at several products and offers.

Nobody accompanies him who points out the right products or really arouses his interest in something.

At some point the potential customer gives up and leaves the shop without buying anything ...

With funnel ...

Now imagine another potential customer walking into a business. This one is an employee directly on the spot and asks him what he is interested in.

The customer is taken by the hand and led directly to the product in which he is interested. In fact, the employee shows him even more complementary products that go with what he wants to buy.

In the end, the customer not only buys the product he was interested in, but also other complementary products that go with it.

It's the equivalent of a funnel!

It's a process that transforms a visitor into a prospect, lead, buyer, and returning buyer.

As you can see, a funnel helps achieve your marketing and sales goals. It doesn't matter whether it's about generating a sale, building a lead or building an email list.

In sales, a funnel also helps to increase the average value of a customer. This happens through so-called "upsells", sales through complementary products that are offered to someone directly with the initial purchase.

Does that sound too abstract? To give a very simple example of what each of us has heard before.

Every McDomald’s employee with every order

In fact, McDonalds can multiply its sales by asking this simple question ... This is an "upsell".

The different steps of a funnel

Each step in a funnel has a specific purpose. Depending on how complex a funnel is, it can have several steps. However, the goals are always the same.

Funnel entrance

Build awareness for your product or service. In order to become a customer or prospect, people first have to find out that you and your product exist.

Next step: the “engagement” / the interaction

It is not enough that people only learn about your product, they must also be interested in buying it.

The second step should always be getting people interested by asking questions about your product, interacting with your content and social media channels, and signing up for your newsletter. A lead magnet is usually used for this, which is exchanged for the email address. Ideally, this is where they become qualified leads.

The ultimate goal: Selling / Conversion

Prospects become leads, then customers, and then returning customers.

Why YOU need a sales funnel

Even if there has been a little too much hype about sales funnel here and there lately, the idea is undisputed.

A funnel helps you to achieve your goals online and offline. He helps pick up prospects, turn them into leads, and then turn them into paying customers.

In addition, a funnel helps you to increase your average customer value through direct upsells.

It doesn't matter whether you are in online marketing, in MLM, author, speaker, affiliate, or have a shop ...Every business is dependent on paying customers, and a funnel will help you generate customers!

Where do I get a funnel from?

A funnel usually consists of at least 2 steps. A page that captures e-mail addresses (opt-in page / landing page) and a “thank you page” to which your visitors are directed after they have entered their e-mail address. For this you need email software such as Klick Tipp.
